Okay, real talk: when I first wrote this, Instagram was a photo app. Cute squares, a couple of filters, done. That Instagram is gone. Today it’s a full-on video-and-shopping machine with over 2 billion people scrolling it every month — and if you run a business, especially a visual or local one, it’s still one of the best rooms you can walk into. You have to know how the room works now, because it changed—a lot. Let me catch you up.
First — what Instagram actually is in 2026
It’s video-first. Reels eat up roughly 46% of the time people spend in the app, and they’re how strangers find you — a Reel reaches about 2x more non-followers than any other format. Translation: if you want new eyeballs (you do), you make Reels. The pretty grid still matters for first impressions, but it’s not what gets you discovered anymore.
Get a Professional account.
(free, and you’re flying blind without it)
Flip your profile to Business or Creator in settings. Costs nothing, unlocks Insights — who your followers are, when they’re online, which posts landed. You can’t improve what you can’t see, so this is step zero.
Nail your bio — still your storefront window
Your Profile Photo: A pic that makes sense.
Logo, clean headshot, or a crisp shot of your product/storefront. Not a blurry selfie.
Your One-Line Description: A one-liner that says what you do.
Direct and a little catchy beats clever-but-confusing every time. Toss in an emoji — it’s a phone app, have fun.
Contact Options: Make it stupid-easy to reach you.
Phone, email, address + hours if you’ve got a physical spot. What’s convenient for you isn’t always what’s convenient for them, so give options.
Your Links and Why “Link in Bio” Is Changing
Real change here: the old “you only get one link” rule is dead. You can stack up to five links now, drop link stickers in Stories, and Meta’s basically declared the link-in-bio era over as it builds links right into Reels.
#protip on links: Feed and carousel captions still can’t hold a clickable link — paste a URL in a caption, and it’s just untappable text. So the slick move is comment-to-DM: “comment LINK and I’ll send it to you,” then automation instantly DMs everyone the link. (My favorite trick — more in a sec.)
Reels: the main event
If you take one thing from this rewrite, it’s this. Short, vertical, sound-on, useful or entertaining (ideally both). Behind-the-scenes, quick tips, before-and-afters, “day in the life,” answering a customer question on camera — all gold. You don’t need a film crew; you need actually to show up. Consistency beats polish here every single time.
Get found on purpose (Instagram is a search engine now)
People search for it like Google. Put real keywords in your captions and bio — what you do, where you are (“Newport wedding florist,” not “✨vibes✨”). Carousels are still great for saves and step-by-step teaching, and saves tell the algorithm your stuff is worth keeping.
Turn attention into actual conversations (and sales)
DMs are where the money quietly happens now. Someone asks a question, you answer, and you book the job. And that comment-to-DM move? That’s straight automation — someone comments a keyword, instantly gets a DM with your link/menu/booking page, and the lead drops right into your pipeline while you sleep. (This is literally what we wire up at x10i — if it sounds like magic, it’s just plumbing. Holler.)
Stories & Live — the low-stakes daily stuff
Stories are your casual here ‘s-what-we’re-up-to channel, gone in 24 hours, perfect for staying top-of-mind without overthinking. Going Live takes a little planning, but it’s great for launches and Q&As — and live shopping converts way better than a regular post once you’ve built an audience.
So where do you start?
Switch to a Professional account, fix your bio, and post one Reel this week. That’s the whole on-ramp. Do it for a month, and you’ll have more reach and more data than the version of you that’s been “meaning to get on Instagram” for two years. 😉
And if the content treadmill makes you want to lie down, building the system so it runs without eating your week is the whole x10i thing. We set up the posting rhythm, the comment-to-DM automations, and the hand-off into your CRM so a like can actually become a paying customer.
