They get all up in the faces of other Plugins and all hell breaks loose in your coding. I know that's an ambiguous answer however I do know this first hand as well and does exist and it's a big problem :-p Every time I install a new theme, or revert to an older one, I seem to have to upload everything again--get ready for a few hours of tweaking it to your liking and make sure you have your artwork at hand.. a lot of times if you copy the link of the image prior to the re-theming, you can use that image link (resizing sucks though). A lot of times the change is because there is another CMS inside the new WP CMS and it wipes out the original settings. If you're ever going to do a total rework of a website, I suggest testing it on a database in a folder other than your root, then exporting/importing settings when you're ready to go live. You've ALWAYS got to back up your FULL database prior to changing anything drastic though. Before activating, deactivating.. who knows if the recent WP 3.3.1 update screws it up for one plugin and all of a sudden you can't log in because that page is corrupted now? Play it safe and don't use too many Plugins. I had to update the WP software and the theme and so I was able to create a child theme although I don't know if I did it right. I still lost the logo image for my site and had to put it back. But since I hadn't done too much customization I was able to do it rather easily. I know there are backup and WP and theme updating plugins, but I'm skeered to pick one.
