My 7 favorite WordPress Plugins :)

My 7 favorite WordPress Plugins :)

I’ve been using WP for a while now and I figured I’d share some of my secrets.  I understand how hard it can be to teach yourself WordPress blogging but I’ve been consulting my expert, Ms. Google, and she helps me attain everything I’d ever need to (ask for) online. Akismet:  Your WordPress blog comes naturally with this amazing spam filter, but you do need to sign up to get an API on their website.  To sign up for an API key, click here. Star that email that you get because you’ll probably need that key later on in your blogging career.  You can use it with multiple blogs. Goto Plugins>Activate Akismet>Settings>Paste your API Key & update. SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam:  Adds a captcha to your comments so that it keeps...

@NickDodman OCD in Dogs: You are not alone. Tips and tricks from one dog-owner to another

You think you’ve seen it before on the Dog Whisperer.  Unfortunately, it exists more than just on TV.  My Lilia has OCD (she chases shadows and lights) and she has been super aggressive towards other dogs when I walk her.  Hancock Animal Hospital in Quincy was able to diagnose her and give her Clomicalm once daily but nothing was really helping. Enter the New England version of Cesar.. only better. I first heard of Dr. Nicholas Dodman, author of Dogs Behaving Badly: An A-Z Guide to Understanding and Curing Behavorial Problems in Dogs from the behaviorist at my local Petco.  He’s located at Tufts Veterinary Hospital in Grafton, MA and pretty darn expensive, so I was hoping he would be worth the $421 to see him for an hour and a half.  I’ve...

Don’t Get Scammed by f.y.e.’s Backstage Pass VIP Program!

Normally, I post travel articles to Beantown Socialite; however, this is something that I think people should be aware of as it has just happened to me. Back in June, I purchased a few MP3s from f.y.e. (one of the few music and video store chains left) down in Westerly RI. The clerk there asked me I wanted to join their Backstage Pass VIP program. I said no. I have too many cards and programs I’m already a part of and wasn’t interested in any more. Well, I guess that didn’t stop them (f.y.e. that is). I got signed up anyway. And after three months I finally noticed monthly charges on my debit card account for $11.99 totalling $35.97 so far! I was incensed when I found this out. So I did a little research and it seems that this has been going on...

Simple Mobile–An unlimited plan for $60? Really?

I’ve been a Blackberry user for over two years (Storm), and prior to that, a Windows smartphone user (HTC Vox, HTC Excalibur).  Yet I have never owned an iPhone until now… but thanks to a great friend, a few weeks ago I became the proud owner of a perfectly good 16GB iPhone 3G.  I know it’s not an iPhone 4.. but you guys don’t even have 4G like Sprint’s their Evo and until everything’s hashed out with the service and quickness and I can get something better than what I’ve got now for a price that I would submit to (and unlimited data), there’s really no reason for me to switch. Luckily, I recently saw a news article about this Tethering program called Handy Light, and I proceeded to pay $1.99 for it (my first...

How to Create a Static WordPress Website (with a blog on the side) Step 1

So every once in a while a client asks me to put together a website for them.  I’m not going to lie, I use WordPress because I am NOT a full-service website developer.. I am a Social Media Producer and some of what I specialize in is inbound marketing to WP blogs.  I also prefer to let my clients have administrative access without pulling my hair out when I want to and WordPress allows me to do so. Step 1:  Pick a theme.  There are some very FREE nice WordPress themes right on their website.  Some of these custom blog themes are amazingly adaptable when it comes to changing their headers, widget placement and php & css altogether.  Basically, you can change a lot to make it look more like your prior site, but I prefer to start with a color scheme...

How To Change Your Blog Avatar Using Gravatar

Gravatars are the universal avatar syndicated over the web. Super easy.  From Gravatar.com:  ”Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog.  Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?” There’s even a video on how to set it up and how and when they’re used: http://v.wordpress.com/wp-content/plugins/video/flvplayer.swf?ver=1.21 Sign up.  Add email address(es) that you use to comment or post to WordPress blogs.  Add a photo (or logo) that you’re going to use throughout the web. Lather, rinse, repeat After signing up, you can go in and manage your Gravatar images on a...
