My Type-O Diet

Sooo, I found out recently I was a blood type O+.. Finally called the Rhode Island Blood Center and asked them. I had donated blood back in 2002 and honestly never had the need to check in on that.. A friend told me about the Blood Type Diet. Apparently it’s a book series that concentrates on the blood type you are and tells you out the foods you should be eating and even more that you should not. Fucking awesome that I have like 50% of the “bad foods” in my fridge currently. I honestly thought brussels sprouts, cauliflower, avocado and catfish were AMAZING for me.. but I figured since I’m not feeling 100% recently so anything’s worth a the ol’ freshman try…

Let’s back it up a little: it’s not like I’m worried about my weight. I’m a normal height/weight ratio. I’m like 5’4″ and 118#. When it comes down to my health, however, I could totally use some more goddamn energy. I’ve been depending upon a shortie of OJ every morning for the sugar buzz for a while now and I’ve recently started enjoying a cup of coffee/espresso (black) or two.. or three.. over the past few weeks throughout the course of the day up to get my ass in gear. To get me interested in biking or yoga.. to make me go like “dadadadadadadaddada” when I’m on the phone or in a meeting… to get this buzz that >50% of Americans enjoy that I have honestly been blowing off recently… and to ultimately make me feel like I have ridic anxiety that makes me want to fucking puke my brains out because I’m overheated :-p

Enter the Blood Type O Diet…

So this is my new shopping list:

Meat/Seafood

Beef, lamb, veal, chicken, turkey

Cod, Herring, mackerel, salmon, tuna, shrimp, scallops, crab

Dairy

Butter, feta, mozz, goat cheese, soy milk

Fat

Olive oil, flaxseed, canola, sesame

Nuts and seeds

Pumpkin seeds, walnuts, almonds

Beans

Aduke, azuki, pinto, black-eyed

Grains

Essene, ezekiel, amaranth, barley, buckwheat, rice, kamut, kasha, millet, rye, spelt

Veggies

Artichoke, chicory, dandelion, garlic, horseradish, kale, leek, okra, onions, parsley, parsnips, red peppers, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, seaweed, turnips, tomatoes, collard greens, romaine, spinach, ew broccoli

Fruits

Plums, prunes, figs, grapefruit, berries (minus strawberries, blackberries)

Spices

Kelp, iodized salt, parsley, curry, cayenne

Condiments

Chocolate, honey, cocao

Beverages

Seltzer, club soda, green tea, wine

WTF? I can’t have beer anymore? Or vodak??

So as I sit, drinking my glass of wine (prefer red but drinking white currently), I’m playing around with my Pinterest and creating a board with some fun recipes I should be making from here on out..

However.. I’ve got all these shitty ingredients in my fridge: avocados, rum, corn, beer, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, vodka, mushrooms, cantaloupe, tequila, strawberries, bacon… so I’ve got to go on a bit of a “bad food bender” over the next week or so.

My challenge to myself.. and to my readers–if you are in fact an O blood type and want to try to become “healthier” per this diet–is as of Nov 1, avoid the heck out of the bad and only eat/drink the good stuff. I should probably pick up the book sooner than later (or someone can buy it for me Kindle-style)–however I’m going to try to quickly wean out the bad dairy, gluten, pig meat (BOOOOO!), beer (DOUBLE BOOOOO!), etc. that I’ve been eating to try and keep “healthy,” as soon as November hits…

What are you thinking? Do you have any good recipes? I think my first creation may involve some curry raisin chicken salad + Ezekiel bread and some greens… but anything tasty could be helpful! Follow my Pinterest for some good O+ blood type food ideas I’ve found–and help me pin!

What are you doing for New Year’s 2011?

As it is with most people during their busy holiday seasons, I always have an issue with figuring out what the heck I’m going to do for New Year’s Eve every year and usually push it off until last minute. Most of the time, I end up at Killington after about 4+ hours of driving through the blusteriest obstacles you can possibly imagine and get there around the ball drop super stressed and not able to pin down that NYE random kiss :-* Last year I celebrated with Bokx 109 in Newton thanks to an amazing Twitter giveaway–which was an amazing dinner TYVM. This year, I’m celebrating with Boston Event Guide at their Resolution Ball, which I have been interested in checking out over the past few years.. I just didn’t have a date! I usually head out with the ladies to pick up men since I’m perpetually single. This year I have someone in mind

So I invite YOU to come out and celebrate the biggest New Year’s Eve event in Boston this season! The Felix Brown Band is playing and they’ve got DJ Samuel L spinning tunes. This is black tie optional although I will probably make my date wear a tux just b/c I’m sure he’ll look amazing on my arm in it Don’t hate.

Loon Lake and with its mountain gondola ride, and Lake Winnipesaukee with its incredible panoramas and but a few of the wonders that await you in The Granite State. New Hampshire is also the home of the first Presidential Primary in the country—a politically distinctive honor. Samuel Adams Summer Ale®: The Meaning Of New England – Part One

Sitting on the Shelter Harbor beach in Westerly Rhode Island drinking a Samuel Adams Summer Ale®,

I ponder a particular question as I have done many times in my life. What is it about New England that is both so uniquely American and yet so different from the rest of the country? Surely every part of the United States of America has its special beauty and fine local color, but New England is special in ways I think only New Englanders can truly appreciate. How so? Let us begin with the dawn of another beautiful New England Summer and a day trip to the enchanting little peninsula known as Cape Cod.

From the time Captain John Smith coined the term, New England, back in 1614, this little spur of land has held a lot of history and charm within its small borders for centuries. Once the domain for Native American tribes such as the Wampanoag, who helped to shape the ubiquitous American tradition known as Thanksgiving, “The Cape” (as it is called) now-a-days is home to such lovely little hamlets like Hyannis, Falmouth, Bourne, and Provincetown. With its sandy white beaches and its ferries to the magical Island of Martha’s Vineyard or the nautical islet of Nantucket, there sometimes is nothing finer than sitting outside a little seafood nook overlooking the water, dining on fried whole body clams and drinking a Sam Adams.

Which was exactly what my lovely angel of a wife, Stace (short for Stacey), and I were doing this very summer. We had spent the whole day touring the quaint little shops in Falmouth and Hyannis and now it was time to relax (as if we weren’t already doing that for most of the day) and enjoy a Samuel Adams Summer Ale®.

Do I ever love that beer in the summer! With its light citrus taste married to a zesty lemon flavor and topped off with a hint of pepper for a crisp, full-body beer drinking experience The Summer Ale reminds one of sitting on a tropical island, bathing in the resplendent sun. This beverage typifies the Cape Cod experience without even having left the mainland.

Later, I turn to her and asked, “Where to next Stace?”

“Martha’s Vineyard of course,” was her jovial reply.

The next day we departed from The Steamship Authority in Falmouth headed for Martha’s Vineyard. Now here is a true New England destination. Once the location for the first two Jaws movies (the original directed by Steven Spielberg), “the Vineyard” (as it is commonly referred to) is a great New England “port of call” to visit in the summer.

Stace and I landed in Oaks Bluff and proceeded to explore as much of the island in the short time we had there as we have done many times over the years. Fortunately for us we had friends staying on the island that offered to put us up for the night. We browsed the expensive shops, ate our fill of lobster rolls and clam cakes, enjoyed a dessert of the homemade Mad Martha’s ice cream, and finally made our way over to Edgartown to meet up with our friends.

Now lots can be said for the plethora of New England style restaurants on the Vineyard, but almost invariably most of them will carry on tap Samuel Adams Summer Ale. And when eating a local lobster (yes lobster again, I can’t help it) on the deck of one of these seaside taverns looking at the yachts coming and going in the marina, the only beverage that will do is a beer.

Even our friends were kicking back the Sam Summer Ale in sixteen and twenty-four ounce glasses long after the golden sun had dipped below the horizon and the night’s revels ubiquitously begun.

Of course New England isn’t always about the ocean, as some days later we embarked on the next leg in my wife’s and my odyssey, to Portsmouth New Hampshire.

5/14/10 Out on the town: ArtBar and Brandon Keith Hair

I think I spent $6 last night. On tips.

First of all; HUUUUUGE thanks to CitySearch Christine (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) for the invite to the ArtBar patio opening last night. They had openbar yumyums sponsored by Bacardi, Sam Adams and Grey Goose and I helped myself to a few glasses of super oakey house chardonnay. There were also tons of finger treats being passed around including lobster rolls (super yum), fried clam rolls, beet teases, SPICY wings, chocolate and berry desserts, gazpacho and more.. I think there was also an olive bar on a large table in the middle of the outdoors crowd but I’m not a big fan of olives so I passed.

Two thumbs up. Nice waterfront location and the crowd had all the quintessential Cambridge folk. The geeks, the artsies, the gaytourage (apparently the group actually calls themself that..) and the swanky preps that look like they just stepped off their yachts, Muffy.

After leaving there.. and we stayed until the end.. totally worth it , we moved along to a tip that we got from Chocolate Chevon Johnson and scurried to Brandon Keith Hair’s opening @ 161 Newbury. I was greeted with champagne and a PUGGLE!!! I did feel short though, b/c of all the tall models flaunting sweet hairstyles. I think there were a few giveaways but we walked in as soon as BK got off the mic. They also had goody bags (and I love my hair goodie bags!), but I guess we missed out on them since it was a pretty full house. Whatev. I got loaded.

I think we went to Joe’s then CityBar afterwards.. but @ this point, I was switching to H2O. Probably a good call. Thanks Tom for the ride home. Hope to see myself tagged in a few pics soon

Coupla side notes since I haven’t posted for about a week: Has anybody else noticed how Comcast screwed with our pirated cable? I mean, I live in a converted one-family so everything’s somehow together but I don’t have a box and now I only get to ch 22. Guess I’m going to have to go to a bar to watch the Bruins defeat the Flyers tonight o.O

AND is anybody else missing Newport? I can’t wait to hang out @ castles and attend yacht afterhours in the harbor again. And go sailing. Watch out JUNE BIRTHDAY MONTH!

I celebrated New Years Eve 2010 @ Bokx 109

Happy New Year everybody! I had a blast in 2009, although, I’m hoping 2010 brings much health, wealth and all the happy stuff that goes along with it to my family, friends, and self

I was lucky enough to win a great Eve dinner at BOKX 109, in Newton, and I enjoyed some amazing fare, which you can see here.. I’ll quickly run down what I got:

The lobster pot pie was such a tease! It was a small piece of lobster in bisque with a bit of bready goodness but I wanted so much more than the small melamine spoon that it was served in.. but that’s okay.. b/c dinner got pretty deep after that.

I chose the tataki for my 2nd course, which was a few amazing pieces of sashimi, while my date chose the parsnip soup. He didn’t care for it so much, as it was too creamy for his taste, but I had a problem not devouring the stuff, as I thought it was pretty freaking great. I told him I would have traded

We both ordered red oak for our third course, and the goat cheese truffles were warm and melty and creamy and soo good so you had to make sure you had a bit in every bite of red oak. I also fell in love with the orangish flavored gooey dressing so much as well that I had to make sure I dipped before the red oak fell off my fork.

The poached lobster was absolutely my favorite part of the dinner (other than the Clicquot toast), as the tarragon taste really came out in the light green sauce and the vanilla in the rice that was married to my dish was a really nice contrast. My date had the short ribs, and they were sooo decadent (yes I stole a bite) marinated in their wine sauce. The actual color of the meat was Syrah red

We both had one or the other dessert, but at this time, we were totally full and just picking off the complimentary cotton candy. We had a great wine and I’ll add the name once I get my notes out of my other purse…

Nicole Dupont was an angel, and her husband was sweet too. Unfortunately, some people get rowdy, and there was a bit of a scuffle @ the end of the night and we all had to dissipate post-haste. It was resolved, but sadly, we all had to gather in the hotel’s lobby finishing our drinks. Something to remember: It’s not BOKX’s fault for this happening, and they did take care of it the way you have to; with tough love, nixing the party, which was @ last call anyway, but overall, making sure everyone was out of harms way.

Where are you going? I’m socializing AND networking. Bring cards!

Hello all~

I would like everybody to keep everybody else in the loop by saying where you’re going, what your picks are and how great the event you went to yesterday was. You’re welcome to post events on the calendar as well as talk about what it is you do in a discussion forum.

Tonight I RSVP’d to go to the New Bedford Chamber BAH @ Hawthorne in Dartmouth. I probably won’t get there until around 5:30/6, b/c I have to take over the phones @ the end of the day, but I look forward to touching base with some long-lost contacts.

Last night I went to Stilettos in the City @ Red Sky (more of a social network gathering) and got to Sven Meyer’s event around 9:30. @ the first one, I really only met designers but Red Sky’s Tuesday ladies & 80′s night boasts a 3-course meal for free for us ladies.. totally worth the ride Got to SM event @ Vlora too late to do any serious networking but caught up with a few old networked buddies from my real estate days.
